About

A structured companion, not a replacement.

The Kind Learner is a structured, evidence-informed resource designed to help primary teachers and SENDCOs think through a child's needs and receive practical, prioritised classroom support. It is not a report writer, not a pupil database, and not a diagnostic tool.

Who you're speaking to

Hello, I'm Roger.

I've spent over 25 years in primary education — more than 13 of them as a headteacher — leading schools, supporting families and sitting on both sides of hundreds of conversations about a child who needs something different.

I'm also a parent. Our own family has walked through school anxiety, transition worries and the slow, patient work of helping a child feel safe enough to learn. That experience shapes everything here.

The Kind Learner exists so that no parent or teacher has to work it out alone — no jargon, no judgement, just practical next steps from someone who has done it in real schools.

What school leaders say

Roger has been an inspirational support to me and our school over the past few years. Working with him has been instrumental in driving and transforming our approach to inclusion, SEND, and SEMH provision.

What sets Roger apart is his ability to combine deep knowledge with genuine empathy. He took the time to understand our context and helped us build a clear, realistic and sustainable strategy that is having a real impact on the children and families we serve.

He has left us with not just an outstanding provision, but a lasting legacy that will benefit our children for many years to come. I would recommend him without hesitation to any school looking to transform its approach to inclusion and SEMH provision.

Why speak to a headteacher?
  • I know how schools actually work

From provision maps to SEN support plans and EHCP applications — I know what schools can do, and what to ask for.

  • No agenda, no jargon

I'm independent of your school, so you get honest, plain-English advice with nothing to defend.

  • Practical, not theoretical

You leave every conversation with two or three things you can genuinely try this week.

Core philosophy

Seven guiding principles.

  1. 01
Every teacher is a teacher of SEND.
  2. 02
Good teaching for pupils with SEND is good teaching for all.
  3. 03
Focus on educational need rather than diagnosis.
  4. 04
Build on strengths before identifying barriers.
  5. 05
Remove barriers rather than expecting children to adapt to the environment.
  6. 06
High-quality classroom teaching is the primary intervention.
  7. 07
    Professional judgement always leads.
