Cognitive load is simply how much a task asks the mind to juggle at once. We can only hold a few new things in mind at a time, so when a lesson or an activity demands more than that, learning stalls — not because the child cannot do it, but because there is no room left to think. Some of that load is useful: the effort of grappling with new ideas. Much of it is accidental: cluttered slides, unclear instructions, unfamiliar vocabulary, copying while listening. That matters because reducing accidental load is one of the most reliable ways to help every child in the room, and it costs nothing but design. Simplify what surrounds the learning so effort goes into the learning itself.

Everyday things you may see

These are observations, not labels. One on its own means very little; a pattern over time is worth talking about.

  • Children cope until two things are asked at once.
  • Mistakes cluster at the start of new topics.
  • Lots of hands go up asking what to do, not how to do it.
  • Work quality drops on visually busy worksheets.
  • Children can do the steps separately but not together.
  • The class goes quiet in the wrong way — overwhelmed, not focused.

Supporting your child at home

Small, achievable things that make a real difference — no special resources needed.

  1. Clear the table

    A calm, uncluttered space is a genuine intervention, not a tidiness preference.

  2. One instruction, one action

    Long strings of requests overload quickly. Short and sequential works better.

  3. Do the hardest bit first

    Capacity is highest at the start of a homework session, not at the end.

  4. Let them explain it to you

    Explaining out loud consolidates learning and shows you where the overload sits.

  5. Stop before meltdown

    Once a child is overwhelmed, nothing more goes in. A break is more productive than persistence.

Practical, realistic and usable in a mainstream classroom tomorrow.

  1. Show a worked example

    Fully worked examples reduce load dramatically when material is new, before moving to independent practice.

  2. Strip the slide back

    Remove decorative images, extra text and animation. Only what is needed to think should be on screen.

  3. Teach the vocabulary first

    Pre-teaching key words means children are not decoding language and concept at the same time.

  4. Separate listening from writing

    Ask children to listen, then write. Doing both at once halves the capacity for either.

  5. Build fluency in the basics

    Well-practised number facts and handwriting free capacity for the harder thinking.

Decorative extras compete for the same limited attention as the content.

Ask which parts of a task the child can already do independently — it locates where the overload actually begins.
