How children make sense of what adults say — and what we can change about the way we communicate so that more children understand, participate and show what they know.

These are prompts for professional reflection, not diagnostic criteria.

  • Completes only part of a multi-step instruction.
  • Watches peers before starting, or copies rather than responding independently.
  • Frequently asks "What do I do?" after instructions have been given.
  • Misunderstands words with more than one meaning, or subject-specific vocabulary.
  • Gives an answer that doesn't appear to relate to the question asked.
  • Needs instructions repeated or rephrased routinely.
  • Performs noticeably better when information is shown as well as said.
  • Struggles more when the classroom is noisy, or during long explanations.

Adaptive teaching strategies

Get attention before the message

Name first, agreed visual cue, competing noise reduced — then the key information. Attention has to precede processing.

Keep instructions in task order

"Get your maths book. Open it at page 24. Then start question one." Sequence the words the way the actions happen.

Pair every instruction with a visual

Keywords on the board, a worked example, a now/next board, a demonstration. A second route into the meaning.

Protect processing time

Wait before repeating. Don't rephrase into a new sentence — that restarts the processing. Treat thinking time as inclusive practice, not a reward.

Check what has been understood

"What are you doing first?", "Show me where you'll start", "Tell your partner step one." Far more informative than "Do you understand?"

Pre-teach the language of the lesson

Introduce the two or three words the task depends on before the task, and use them repeatedly across the week.

Practical classroom approaches

Shorten before you simplify

Length overloads before complexity does. Cut the sentence in half before you change the vocabulary.

Structured talk partners

Rehearsing an answer with a partner before sharing lowers the language demand of responding in public.

Question scaffolding

Signal the type of answer wanted: "I want one word", "give me a reason", "tell me the order".

Noise audit

Give the key instruction when the room is quiet, not over it. Understanding drops sharply against background noise.

Common misconceptions

  • "They weren't listening." They may have listened and still not understood.
  • "They understood yesterday." Familiar language in a calm moment is a different demand from new language in a busy one.
  • "They're being defiant." Non-compliance and non-comprehension can look identical from the front of the room.
  • "They're quiet, so they're fine." Children who understand less often say less, and are easily missed.

EEF evidence on oral language interventions shows consistent positive impact when purposeful speaking and listening, explicit vocabulary teaching and structured interaction are integrated into everyday teaching rather than bolted on. Speech and Language UK and DfE SEND guidance point the same way: communication-supportive classrooms first, targeted support second.

Important limitation

No single strategy resolves every difficulty with spoken language. Observe the child, consider the context, and review the impact of any adaptation rather than applying strategies mechanically.

Classroom scenarios

1. The multi-step instruction

"Put your maths book away, get your English book, write today's date, underline it, turn to page 46 and complete the first three questions." One pupil stays seated and watches the others; repeating the whole instruction changes nothing. That sentence asks a child to remember several steps, hold the sequence, find the resources and know what comes next. Try one step, pause, next step — with a visual checklist left on the board. Review: did the pupil start more independently, and did adult repetition reduce?

2. "He wasn't listening"

A pupil looks at the teacher throughout discussion but answers a different question. Facing a speaker tells us nothing about how much language was understood. Was the question long? Unfamiliar vocabulary? Did it require inference? Was there processing time? Try shorter questions, one at a time, extra time, visual prompts, partner rehearsal, and checking what the pupil thought the question was asking.

3. Vocabulary barrier

"Explain how evaporation contributes to the water cycle." A pupil who knows a great deal about water cannot respond, and the teacher concludes the science is missing. The concept may be secure while evaporation, contributes and water cycle are not. Teach the words explicitly first — visuals, examples, gestures, simple definitions, repeated meaningful use — then let the pupil rehearse the explanation.

4. Understanding improves when language is shown

A pupil struggles with verbal instructions but succeeds once the task is demonstrated. That is useful information, not a workaround. Use demonstration, visual sequences, written keywords, examples, pictures and now/next/then formats. The aim is not to remove spoken language, but to provide another route into understanding.

5. Processing time

"Why do you think the character decided to leave?" No immediate answer, so the teacher rephrases; the pupil then answers correctly. They may simply have needed time to process and formulate. Build a deliberate pause into questioning, and avoid assuming that a fast answer means better understanding.

Myths and frequently asked questions

Myth: not following an instruction means not listening

It tells us that the instruction wasn't followed, not why. The child may have missed part of the message, struggled with vocabulary, forgotten information, misunderstood, or needed more processing time.

Myth: repeating the instruction back means understanding it

Repeating words is not the same as understanding their meaning. Check through action, explanation or demonstration.

Myth: visual supports stop children developing listening skills

Visuals provide an additional route into understanding. Used purposefully, they can often be reduced as a pupil becomes more independent.

Myth: a confident talker cannot have language difficulties

Some children sound verbally confident but still find complex instructions, inference, unfamiliar vocabulary, questions or abstract language difficult.

Myth: saying it louder helps

Volume does not improve comprehension. If the language wasn't understood, change how the information is presented.

Myth: all children should answer immediately

Children need different amounts of processing time. A delayed response does not mean the answer isn't there.

Myth: understanding at home means understanding at school

Understanding is context-dependent. Classrooms add unfamiliar vocabulary, background noise, complex instructions, new concepts and rapid changes of activity.

Working memory

A pupil holds spoken information while deciding what to do — "get your book, write the date, then answer question three." The longer the instruction, the greater the demand. See the Working Memory guide.

Attention

A pupil must attend in order to process, but apparent inattention should not be assumed to be the cause. A child may disengage precisely because the language is hard to follow. See the Attention guide.

Following an instruction can involve planning, sequencing, starting and monitoring progress, so communication and executive function interact. See the Executive Function guide.

Cognitive load

Unnecessarily complex language increases the mental demands of learning. Clear explanations, purposeful visuals and sequenced instructions reduce that load. See the Cognitive Load guide.

Vocabulary and language development

A child cannot easily understand language built from words they have not yet learned, so vocabulary teaching is part of comprehension support. Guide coming soon.

Expressive language

Understanding and expression are related but different: a child may understand more than they can say, or speak fluently while misunderstanding complex language. Guide coming soon.

Social communication

Understanding also involves tone, context, implied meaning, social expectations and another person's perspective. Explored further in the Social Communication guide.

Professional reflection

When a pupil experiences difficulty, ask: is the barrier within the learner, within the language being used, within the environment, or within the interaction between these things? Often there is more than one factor.

Strategy library

1. Gain attention before important information

If a pupil isn't attending, they can miss part of the message before they have a chance to process it. Use the pupil's name, a consistent attention signal, and reduce competing noise. Mark the start of an important instruction clearly, and avoid giving key information while pupils are moving or talking.

2. Chunk instructions

"Get your science book." Pause. "Turn to page 23." Pause. Long instructions load both comprehension and working memory. Chunking should not mean lowering the learning objective — it makes the route to the learning clearer.

3. Pair spoken language with visuals

Pictures, photographs, diagrams, symbols, written keywords, visual timetables, now/next boards, step-by-step sequences, worked examples. A visual gives the pupil something to return to instead of relying wholly on speech.

4. Pre-teach important vocabulary

Pick a small number of key words. For each: what does it mean, what does it look like, what does it sound like, can I show an example, can pupils hear and use it in context? Before a science lesson: show evaporation, explain it accessibly, use it in a sentence, return to it during the lesson.

5. Give processing time

Ask, pause, allow thinking time, then invite responses. Avoid immediately repeating or rephrasing simply because no answer came straight away.

6. Check understanding

"What will you do first?" "Show me where you're going to start." "Which resource do you need?" "Tell your partner what the instruction means." A pupil may say yes to "Do you understand?" while unsure.

7. Use clear, purposeful language

Instead of "What I'd like you to do now, before you get started, is to have a really careful look at the examples...", try: "Look at the examples." Pause. "What do you notice?" Reduce unnecessary complexity while keeping appropriate academic language.

8. Model rather than explain everything

Demonstrate the first question, show how equipment is used, model a sentence, demonstrate the sequence, think aloud through an example. Show it where showing is clearer than explaining.

9. Rephrase rather than simply repeat

"Put your resources away in the appropriate location" becomes "Put the pencils back in the pencil tray." Familiar, concrete language is often more accessible when repetition hasn't worked.

10. Build language into meaningful talk

Partner discussion, structured talk, explaining an answer, describing a process, retelling, role play, collaborative problem-solving. Language develops through opportunities to use it, not passive exposure alone.

Oral language

The EEF identifies oral language interventions as an evidence-informed approach: purposeful interaction, structured questioning, vocabulary development, discussion, modelling language, and structured speaking and listening activities.

Communication-supportive practice

Speech and Language UK guidance for schools points to adapting language, using visual support, allowing processing time, supporting vocabulary and creating communication-friendly environments.

SEND

The SEND Code of Practice is the statutory framework in England, emphasising early identification, understanding individual needs, partnership with parents, participation of children and young people, appropriate provision and review of support.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary knowledge is closely connected with pupils' ability to understand and participate. Practice should make important vocabulary explicit and give meaningful opportunities to encounter and use new words.

Language in the curriculum

Every curriculum area contains language pupils must understand: subject vocabulary, instructions, explanations, questions, concepts and the relationships between ideas. Communication-supportive teaching is relevant across the curriculum.

Interpreting evidence

Evidence for an approach does not mean it will work for every pupil, that it should be used identically for every child, that it replaces professional judgement, or that it provides a diagnosis.

Short summary for teachers

Good classroom communication is not simply about speaking clearly. It involves giving pupils meaningful opportunities to hear, understand, process and use language. Clear instructions, purposeful talk, vocabulary teaching, visual support and appropriate processing time can help reduce barriers to learning.

Making communication part of ordinary teaching

You do not need a separate communication programme. Start with a small number of consistent practices and keep them going.
